I began to explore botanical drawing and painting over 30 years ago when we moved from Toronto to a  beautiful country property in Carlisle, Ontario.

At the time,  I was apprenticing with one of Canada's finest wood engravers, Gerard Brender à Brandis, who at the time was publishing a book of his floral engravings. He also shared his passion as a keen gardener with Carl and me.  Eventually the grunt work in our garden began to translate into two-dimensional works in my studio.

An offering of beloved domestic pets and other sundry creatures.

Earlier this year ( 2009 ) I was visiting friends in Nanoose Bay and noticed their beautiful black and white cat, "Hope".  I took some photos of her, thinking she might be a fun subject to draw: all those wonderful linear aspects and the changing fur patterns and contrasts. They purchased one of the drawings as a gift for their daughter in Ontario.

Just before starting to draw cats, I made a determined effort to sketch our beloved mini-schnauzer TILLY.  She is over thirteen years old and I wanted to record her now while she is here.  She is such a wonderful model as she sleeps so much these days.  Isn't she beautiful?

I began life-drawing again in the fall of 2006. I attend a weekly four hour session with a small group of local artists at The Old School House Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach each Friday morning. For the past year or so I have been studying the classical drawings of Watteau and Ingres as well as contemporaries like Robert Liberace in the USA. I particularly like using a coloured ground paper with graphite and white pencil. The quality of the materials I use has always been a priority for me.

I am fascinated by the formation of clouds and the wonderful complexity of the sky. Most of my work in this area is done on canvas with oils.

Photography is a very new medium for me. I only began to use the camera a few years ago when I bought my first little point n' shoot Olympus in 2005. Last year I bought a beautiful SLR with telephoto lens. The camera has now become my new sketchbook and I take it along almost everywhere I go!

A sampling of my works since 1975 when I first began to work in visual art. A real pot-pourri!

I will add to this gallery as I uncover old works in my studio.  As you can see, my interests over the past thirty-five years in the studio are diverse and I have been investigating and continue to explore new subjects and techniques.
